FRONT COVER - This is a camera trap shot of a bobcat on a log on my property near Susanville, Lassen County CA. In 2023 this shot and a short article on camera trapping that I wrote appeared in Outdoor Photographer magazine.

JANUARY - this is a shot taken with a drone of my favorite oak tree near Susanville, Lassen County CA. It was taken at the end of the record winter of 2022-2023.

FEBRUARY - This is a camera trap shot (DSLR camera with off-camera speedlights, actuated by an infrared trigger. This bobcat tripped the camera during a snowfall, which made for an otherworldly scene.

MARCH - The same oak tree as the January photo, this image is the result of a year of photos taken from the same spot. In 2020 I set out to do a "4 seasons" series of photos of this tree, intending to simply print each individual photo. When I had all the images, I played with layering them in Photoshop, and this was the result. To me it captures the transition from winter into spring very well.

APRIL - Manzanita Lake and Mt. Lassen in Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA. This shot was taken in April 2023 from the north end of Manzanita Lake.

MAY - Burney Falls, CA. This is a 20 second exposure of the majority of the face of Burney Falls, taken with a 10-stop ND filter to allow a long exposure during the day. The long exposure is what gives the smooth silky motion blur appearance to the water.

JUNE - This is Lake Almanor with Mt. Lassen in the background behind Dave in his kayak. I took this shot from the tip of Rocky Point during a summer camping trip. I took another version after Dave drifted out of the scene, but I like the one with him in it because it makes me jealous that I wasn't the one out there fishing in this moment.

JULY - This is Gem Lake in the Caribou Wilderness near Lassen National Park. This is a special image to me because it was captured on a backpack trip the year before the Dixie Fire decimated this area.

AUGUST - This is a shot from my 2022 trip to Alaska. I was in hip waders in the Brooks River during the salmon run, and this bear was charging straight for a school of salmon that was between me and the bear. This trip, and moments like this one especially, were absolutely incredible to experience.

SEPTEMBER - This full moonrise was taken in 2021, after the Sheep Fire burned the trees in this image, but before the Dixie Fire burned so much more of the area. This was taken near Susanville, Lassen County CA.

OCTOBER - Fall colors in the Susan River Canyon between Susanville and Westwood, Lassen County CA. Accessible via the Bizz Johnson Trail, the Susan River canyon is an incredible place all year, but it's especially amazing during the height of the fall colors, which usually happens in mid October.

NOVEMBER - The Milky Way and Highway 395, taken in Lassen County. I envisioned this shot a couple years ago, but finally made it happen in 2023. The hardest part was scouting out a spot that had the "395" sign, and also was on a stretch of highway that pointed southwest enough to line up with the Milky Way. the lights in this image are from a passing semi truck, headed south on the highway.

DECEMBER - One of a series of images I captured from my kayak on Antelope Lake, of this eagle snatching a trout from the lake. I like the way you can just barely see the fish in this image, and picture what happened next (I got a fun shot of that also).

NOTES PAGE - This is a spring sunrise in the same meadow where my favorite oak tree is located near Susanville, CA (you can see it on the right side of this image). The yellow flowers here really make the meadow pop, and summarize the feel of spring in the area.
