Catch of the Day
In 1988, the well-known photographer Thomas Mangelsen took a photo of a brown bear making a catch like this at the lip of Brooks Falls, Alaska. He titled the photo “Catch of the Day.” One of the most famous wildlife photos ever taken, it put Brooks Falls (and Thomas Mangelsen) on the map for many people, myself included. I always dreamed of one day seeing this spectacle play out in person, and I entertained secret fantasies of capturing a similar photo. In 2022, I was finally able to live out that dream. This was the first photo of this event that I was able to capture, and it was “enough” for me to be very satisfied, althoughI feel like I topped this photo with my photo called “The Space Between,” This was the one that had me getting emotional when I saw it on the back of the camera though. What an experience. I stole Mangelsen’s title out of respect, and as a nod to the obvious “copycat” shot that I was trying to get.
