Diving Otter

There were three of these otters playing and chasing each other around on these ice shelves at Lake Almanor, and I was able to get fairly close along the shoreline and observe them for a half hour or so. It was a rare treat, as they normally seem to be pretty shy, only giving me glimpses. This shot stood out as the best one of the bunch, although it’s just a single otter. It is in mid-dive, joining its counterparts in the water. This shot was selected as a finalist for California Wildlife Photo of the Year 2024 (final winner to be announced in January 2025)
