Nocturnal

The gray fox, more than any other animal, has been the subject that has allowed me to experiment with camera trap settings and lighting. There are a few locations where I can know with some degree of certainty that one of these guys will show up. This log is one of those places. A favorite bridge over the forest floor below, it’s all but guaranteed that after a few days of waiting, you’ll get a fox on a camera pointed at this log. This shot was the result of a bit of experimentation with backlighting and the use of a rim light. For as regular as they are, I never see these foxes in person. Although I have had daytime encounters in other places, around here they seem to be strictly nocturnal.
