A look you will never, ever forget. This is a “mama bear,” and her two yearlings are out of frame behind her. She is taking a moment to decide if the photographer on the other side of the river is something that needs to be eliminated, or if it’s OK to leave it there while the kids pass through. Knowing the behavior of these animals during the abundance of the salmon run, and knowing that they have seen people in the river quite a bit, we were in a statistically very safe situation… but this look is a pointed reminder that you are not really in control of the situation, and you do not rank as high as you might think you do.
