What Does the Fox Say?

I spent about 30 minutes with this gray fox. It was perched on this rock watching me and occasionally barking like this. It turns out it was a mom, and was barking a warning to its babies to let them know not to come out of hiding. When I finally got up and headed on my way,
I looked back to see at least 3 babies joining mom on the rock.
This image was selected as one of 15 finalist images in the 2023 California Wildlife Photo of the Year contest, and secured a top 3 spot. It was crowned the “Sierra Nevada Conservancy photo of the year” for 2023.
